Lit Review
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I enjoyed listening to this book. The story is a coming-of-age about a woman who loses her job in a cafe and gets a job caring for a quadrapalegic. The story engages issues relating to class and disability all through the development of the characters in the story. I liked the characters quite a bit, and I liked the storytelling as well. Without spoilers, I will say I wasn’t a fan of the ending. We had some debate about it in book club, but I didn’t change my mind about it. Although I don’t feel it was poorly written, the choices that some of the characters made angered me. My book club really liked the book and rated it 4.2. I personally gave the book a 4 on goodreads and 3.75 in book club.
Dracula by Bram Stoker
This is my first time reading Dracula. It is a really fun read. It’s written as an epistelary, a collection of letters and journal entries, which gives the novel a sort of puzzle or mystery feel. The story of Dracula has really lasted–even though there were vampires before this book, I agree with Rabkin, the teacher of my coursera course, this story is still the quintessential vampire story. After reading this and the Walking Dead, I’m beginning to actually like the horror genre a little. I’ve mostly just been scared of horror movies, but I am developing an appreciation for the role of horror in society, related to our hopes and fears and how we understand the world around us.
