Lit Review: The Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende
I’ve read a good number of contemporary slave narratives in my time as an undergrad studying African American literature. This narrative I appreciated especially for two reasons.
1) It takes place in Haiti and not just in the U.S. The story is told through the perspective of French slave owners/slaves rather than English ones. It puts a different perspective on the global nature of the enslavement of Africans.
2) It is told through the perspective of one slave–Tete, but there are also third person scenes that show the perspectives of some of the other characters in the book. Understanding their perspectives puts a lot of context to slavery and the pervasive racism attached to it.
Also, the book has many references to yarn, knitting, and crochet!
Five Favorite Things:
1. Into the Whirled fiber club
2. Man Booker Prize short list
3. The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan
4. The Library Experiment, even though it failed
5. Fall
