Lit Review: The Fault in our Stars by John Green
I loved this book. This book is a young adult novel about teenagers who fall in love. These teenagers are cancer kids. The book is told from the perspective of Hazel, and 16-year-old who was diagnosed with cancer at age 13. It follows her relationship with her parents, especially her mom who strong arms her into going to cancer group, where she meets Gus. Thereafter it follows her love story with Gus. Hazel is smart, a reader, and a thinker, who is quirky and an easy character to root for. Gus is loyal, a wonderful friend, and a great complement to Hazel. All of the characters in this book, especially the quirky ones, are easy to like. The story is beautiful and beautifully written. This book is a tear-jerker, but was definitely worth it. I gave the book 5 stars on Goodreads. The movie is coming out in June, and I am planning to add this book to my Beyond Grey’s Anatomy course next spring (or maybe we’ll watch the movie if it’s good enough) as a way to talk about pop culture representations of kids with cancer. We’ll likely contrast that with pop culture representations of adults with cancer in Breaking Bad and perhaps the HBO film Wit.
